This 1972 Pontiac Firebird restomod has been the subject of an incredibly thorough build process that took it down to individual nuts and bolts. The finished product is a stunning example of old-school muscle car style and a modern V8 powertrain.
When it comes to classic cars that seem like obvious choices for restomods, the 1972 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am probably isn’t near the top of the list. While horsepower numbers largely dropped across the nation that year, the Trans Am was still one of the most potent pony cars on the road with 300 hp (223 kW) on tap. Despite that, this car makes a great case for its modernization.
Under the hood is a 6.0-liter LS2 V8 that develops 400 hp (298 kW). If that engine and its horsepower specification sound familiar it’s because this engine came out of the Australian-made Pontiac GTO. While that sports car didn’t live on, its drivetrain is well-respected and it’s a perfect way to keep this restomod all under one badge.

Mated to that big V8 is a Tremec six-speed manual transmission so driving this particular muscle car should prove to be an engaging experience. Power is sent through an aluminum driveshaft and then into a 10-bolt differential with heavy-duty positraction and 4.11 gears. Of course, with that much extra power on tap, there could be a concern for the aged chassis.
Thankfully, that’s where the exceptional frame-off nut and bolt restoration of this car comes into play. It hasn’t just been returned to its original condition, it’s been dramatically improved with Detroit Speed subframe connectors, tubular A-arms in the front, and heavy-duty high-performance springs at each corner.
Inside, the Firebird is modernized with Autometer gauges, a Vintage Air climate control system, and even an iPad Mini infotainment system. The car is going up for sale during Barret Jackson’s Las Vegas event from June 30th til July 2nd.
