Last year we reported that AMD’s next-generation data center CPUs, the EPYC “Genoa” series, are set to pack up to 96 cores, 192 threads, and 12-channel DDR5-5200 memory. Recent reports seem to confirm these numbers. Now, thanks to @Yuuki_AnS, we have a set of photos of the EPYC Genoa, the SP5 platform with the LGA 6096 socket, and a heatsink.

Looking at the photos, one thing is abundantly clear: EPYC Genoa is not a small chip. The CPU is massive and for good measure, as it will pack so many cores. The heatsink is equally proportioned and has eight Torx screws with four copper heat pipes. The SP5 platform (LGA 6096) featured in the pictures will be the platform for the new EPYC CPUs moving forward.

So, if you want to upgrade to the new EPYC Genoa, you’ll also have to shell out more for the platform as the older SP3 platform can only support up to EPYC Milan chips.

AMD is gearing up to launch the EPYC Genoa CPUs in Q4 2022. VideoCardz speculates that the launch will happen before Intel can start producing volume for the Xeon Sapphire Rapids.
